Remy International began in 1896 when Frank and Perry Remy opened a home wiring business in Anderson, Indiana. The Remy Electric Company was incorporated in 1901. Along with chief competitor, the Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company (Delco), Remy International was purchased by the United Motor Company in 1916 and remained separate until they were purchased again in 1918 by General Motors.

From then on, Delco Remy began developing advanced technologies for automotive and heavy duty products. The heavy duty and automotive divisions were purchased from General Motors in 1994, making Delco Remy its own identity. While the company changed its name back to Remy International in 2004, the Delco Remy brand is still used on some products. The company is now owned by BorgWarner as of 2015.
